What are Truckee’s climate goals?

Community Emission Reduction Targets

  • 2030 - 100% renewable electricity
  • 2040 - Reduce GHG emissions 80% below baseline
  • 2050 - 100% renewable energy

Renewable Electricity

Truckee Donner PUD consistently provides over 60% renewable electricity and is well on its way to reaching 100%.

Solar Implementation

The Building Division has implemented an expedited solar-permitting process for ≤10 kW systems.

Photovoltaic System & Solar Street Lights

In 2012 the Town installed a 14,500 kW photovoltaic system at the new corporation yard. In 2018 and 2019 solar street lights were installed as part of the Brockway Road Corridor Improvement and the Stockrest Springs Road Roundabout projects. In 2021, an additional 14,500 kW photovoltaic system came online at the corporation yard.

Climate Action Plan

The Town is preparing to adopt its first Climate Action Plan in late 2022. In 2021, the Town finished implementing 260,000 kWh of energy efficiency actions such as installing solar powered LED lights at crosswalks and roundabouts, acquiring its first electric vehicle with plans to purchase additional, and upgrading the Town’s heat pump system. The Town has also invested in upgrading multiple municipal buildings to energy efficient lighting systems.

Community Wide Goals

It also became a founding member of the Climate Transformation Alliance (CTA), a regional public private partnership committed to the development of local policy and initiatives that will enhance the resilience of the community to climate and disaster risks, reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and advance the sustainable regional economic development.

Where We Gather Data

From our town halls and animal shelters, to our waste production and fleet management, we are gathering real-time emissions data for a wide range of buildings and services.

24/7 Emissions Tracking

  • 1,047,393 kWh per Year
  • 14,772 GJ per year

The Town of Truckee Operations Tracks Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  • Scope 1 Emissions
  • Natural Gas
  • Fuel
These greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions occur directly from sources owned or controlled by the city. For example fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces and vehicles.
  • Scope 2 Emissions
  • Electricity

These are indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

How are we reducing emissions?

Renewable Diesel Usage

In 2021, the Town of Truckee converted over sixty vehicles to use renewable diesel in order to decrease carbon emissions. This fuel comes from plant-based feedstocks and its performance is equivalent to fossil fuel diesel while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
